Synopsis

A is for All, B is for Branch, C is for Common Good. An ABC of Democracy introduces complicated concepts surrounding politics and government to the youngest of children.

Everyone has the right to be treated fairly, no matter who they are, what they look like, or where they come from. From A to Z, simple explanations accompanied by engaging artwork teach children about the world we live in and how to navigate our way through it.

Each right-hand page includes a brightly decorated letter with the word it stands for and an encouraging slogan. On the left, a colourful illustration and bite-size text sum up the concept. Cheerful people from a range of backgrounds, ethnicities and abilities lead the way through the alphabet.

  • F is for Freedom. We all deserve to be free to choose.

  • P is for People Power. When we come together, we can achieve incredible things!

  • V is for Vote. Everyone should be able to have their say.

  • W is for World. Democracy looks different all around the globe.

A follow-up to the bestselling An ABC of Equality, this beautiful book will teach the youngest of readers about liberty and justice for all.

Reviews

Amanda

This brightly coloured, beautifully illustrated board book focuses on some very 'grown up', complicated topics. This would be the ideal way to introduce different concepts to young children. It celebrates everything from the right to be treated fairly and equality to how we can make our voices heard and vote.

This book may not be for everyone as there are so many ways of introducing these topics and many would choose to introduce them a few at a time. Democracy should be an everyday discussion and something that children are very comfortable with. In school, this would be used for class services, specific pages would be selected to start PSHE discussions and a copy would be in book corners to allow children to have the chance to look and read them for themselves.
