This edition of Anne of Green Gables is a beautifully illustrated re-telling of the wonderfully classic story of lively, impetuous and charming orphan Anne ( with an 'e' ) Shirley who, despite being a girl and not a boy as expected, is adopted by siblings Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert of Green Gables farm.
This is a story of the adventures of Anne from a bold, full of emotion, young girl to a warm hearted and kind-hearted young woman. This new version is colourfully bright and looks fresh and enticing. It is a wonderfully large and inviting picture book format of the story, with touches of luxury in the texture of the book jacket, the cover itself and the ribbon page marker. The illustrations by Isabelle Follath are delightful and bring the characters of bold, red haired Anne , friends and family to life.
Katherine Woodfine's narrative is gentle, charming and stays true to the style of the original author's voice but brings the adventures (and dramas) of Anne's life alive for younger readers. All of Anne's famously spirited and imaginative mistakes, mishaps and plans are delightfully told from her fury at opinionated neighbour Mrs Rachel Lynde's verdict on her looks with"hair as red as carrots!", and her refusal to forgive schoolmate Gilbert for also teasing her about her tresses.
Anne is likeable, loveable and relatable with her explosions of temper and overly emotional responses to both the wonders of her world and the woeful events she feels she experiences. The tone of the narrative flows soothingly and is just a relaxing pleasure to read. Reading this feels like a real comfort read and step back in time. The reader cannot help but connect affectionately with scatty, chatty and ultimately optimistic Anne. A delightful and positively heart-warming reading for pure pleasure opportunity.
