Reviews

Jessica

Bedtime, Little Bear is one in a collection of books by Happy Yak that address everyday routines and conversational topics to deepen our children's knowledge of their immediate world. In this story, we meet Mummy Bear (sporting a fabulous blue scarf) and Little Bear, as they take an ever-familiar walk through the woods as the sun goes down and bedtime approaches.

The narrative is told completely in speech as we are let in to the personal conversation between mother and child. Inevitably, Little Bear is full excuses as to why it's not bedtime yet. Parents may chuckle and snigger as Mummy Bear is consistently presented with "But…".

There is so much to celebrate in the making of this book. The depth in Michelle Carlslund's illustrations is quite astonishing as there are so many layers to each woodland scene in the foreground, mid-ground and background on every single page. The shades of colour and pattern on each page is gorgeous! The interactive element of this books with the tactile silk pull tabs reveal yet more parts to the beautifully illustrated story. There are patterns and textures galore - it really is a treat to look through this book over and over again.

With wildlife and animals to discover and talk about, from the squirrels climbing the trees to the rabbits peeking out from their burrows - this books is perfect to develop children's vocabulary and expose them to a whole host of words that can be used on their next walk. This story ends with the woodland animals asleep - and perhaps your little one will be too after a content, happy and colourful story time.
