Synopsis

Bella Loves Bugs tells the story of a day in the life of a girl who is passionate about bugs, as she goes off to Forest School where she always has many creepy crawlie adventures with her fellow nature hero friends!

The book is packed with facts about bugs, some of which Bella regularly spots, but also includes the bugs she dreams about seeing one day - different insects from all over the world.  Bella makes a magical moth trap, spies a butterfly laying an egg and shows her friends how to hop like a grasshopper! Follow Bella as she shares her love of bugs - discover how many bugs might be lurking in a pond, see how awesome ants are, and be amazed by mighty stag beetles.

With an engaging and lively narrative from Jess French and fun, and warm illustrations from Duncan Beedie this book will help ignite a love and appreciation for nature, right on our doorsteps.  The Nature Heroes series focuses on a group of friends who are passionate about nature and the great outdoors. Each book features a different child who has a favourite topic that they are fascinated by: Billy Loves Birds, Bella Loves Bugs, Ava Loves Animals, and Pedro Loves the Planet!

Playful text and funny relatable illustrations makes this an accessible series, which provides an entertaining introduction to the natural world.

Reviews

Maria

Bella Loves Bugs is an informative narrative which follows a day in the life of little bug-loving Bella, who wants to be an entromologist when she is older. Packed full of fun facts and information, this engaging and colourful text will enthuse and excite young children to carry out some of Bella's activities, like building a tumble trap, and to find out more about the many bugs and habitats that she mentions. From caterpillars and ants to pond dipping and bug hotels, Bella has pretty much everything covered!

The story seamlessly flows from one creature to the next, giving information about appearance, diet, behaviours and other varieties. There is a lot of text but this can be easily broken down into sections, allowing you to focus on just one species at a time.

The curriculum links to this text are endless. It is the ideal text to use alongside the teaching of lifecycles and habitats of bugs as it is very informative and brings a huge sense of awe and wonder. It could also lead onto the writing of non-fiction texts and is a good comparison to use of the two narratives.

The illustrations are bold and clear and support the text brilliantly. They keep the children engaged and are informative alongside descriptions and the story. There’s even a tiny, cheeky spider throughout the book who has many funny captions which add humour alongside the information on the pages!

This book is part of the Nature Heroes series, which are all equally as engaging and informative and following the same group of friends who love the outdoors and wildlife.
