Reviews

Nicola

For me, there are a few names that are synonymous with a good read and one of those names is Laura Ellen Anderson, and she did not disappoint! The rise in popularity of graphic novels has been astronomical and rightfully so; they are such a great way to strengthen reading and improve children's reading habits.

Evil Emperor Penguin: Antics in Antarctica is a simply fabulous example of what a graphic novel for 7+ readers can look like. The graphics are bright, engaging and tell the tale of Evil Emperor Penguin, along with his trusty (or not so trusty) abominable snowman sidekick, Eugene, as they try, try and try again to take over the world. The story itself is hilarious, really dry wit and as an adult reading this I laughed out loud at some of the references and I challenge anyone to read this and not want an abominable snowman with a fear of jelly babies and penchant for making unicorns called Keith!

An excellent read that will be a gateway book to so many young people!

Evil Emperor Penguin: Antic in Antarctica is set in the most southern continent of the world, Antarctica, which is covered in ice and snow. It follows the Evil Emperor Penguin who has high hopes of taking over the world but doesn't really have the skills to execute his plan very well. His arch enemy (Evil Cat) is aware of this as he battles with him to get there first. As the pair race to world domination, you'll experience plenty of hilarious events and exciting adventures, with lots of other interesting creatures too.

This comic strip includes lots of funny content for comic lovers to enjoy. There's an exciting range of characters including penguins, unicorns and an octopus! The pictures are colourful with plenty of speech bubbles and onomatopoeias to bring the story to life. It's a nice way for younger readers to build their stamina and concentration of enjoying stories without having to tackle huge amounts of text. I'm sure young comic lovers will enjoy it!
