Fantastic Female Adventurers in a non fiction text by Lily Dyu consisting of thirteen biographies organised into short chapters. Expertly illustrated by Chellie Carroll, this is a superb read full of incredible and interesting women. The book begins with a world map showing the adventurers' routes around the world from their various starting points. It really shows the range of adventures covered in the book and makes a great discussion point, especially as space is included! Thsee fantastic females have been chosen for their accomplishments and achievements. A wide range of diverse characters, some are household names while others prompted some extra research on my part. These women have run, cycled, skied, rowed and climbed their way around the world and into space. Dyu clearly covers the challenges faced and the training they have undertaken for each challenge. The fact these women are alive and the author has interviewed most make their stories even more personal. Expert illustrations bring each woman's story to life and offer an insight into their equipment and the environment they were faced with. This is not a challenging text to read and would suit children aged 7+. It would work well in a classroom where each story could be dipped into and studied. It is also a fascinating text to read for pleasure. Warning: it will make the reader daydream about the world out there and what their (next) adventure could be! A super addition to any non fiction collection. 160 pages / Ages 7-11 years / Reviewed by Bryony Davies, teacher
