When Tig and his sister Elsa receive a strange letter and two silver charms from their odd grandfather, they wonder if it is some kind of joke. Then their father hears that his father has died and they all journey to his home to sort out his affairs. However, there is something very strange about Grimmheart village and few seem happy at their arrival.
I have a special fondness for books that include a map and this is true of Forest of Forbidden Magic, with a map of the village, perched on top of a high cliff. Of course the village has a library, a bank and a chocolate shop, making it perfect in many ways, so why is it so disturbing? With the help of a local boy called Janek and their cousin Ania, the children set out to discover the secret of the village and why their family is distrusted so much.
What a thrilling and spooky adventure. The village of Grimmheart has so many secrets and Tig and Elsa's family have more than their fair share of them. The issue is who can they trust, and how did their grandfather die? I love the way the author gradually builds up the tension, using the frictions between the various characters. We also have the way that the young people uncover some of the secrets and find that they have to re-assess some of their long-held beliefs.
Forest of Forbidden Magic is a perfect read for those who love a bit of fantasy, mixed with spooky goings-on.
