Synopsis

People are flocking to Ghastly-Gorm Hall from far and wide to compete in Lord Goth's Literary Dog Show. The esteemed judges are in place and the contestants are all ready to win. Sir Walter Splott is preparing his Lanarkshire Lurcher, Plain Austen is preening her Hampshire Hound and Homily Dickinson and her Yankee Poodle are raring to go. But there's something strange going on at Ghastly-Gorm - mysterious footprints, howls in the night and some suspiciously chewed shoes. Can Ada, the Attic Club and their new friends the Vicarage sisters (Charlotte, Emily and Anne) work out what's going on before the next full moon?

Goth Girl and The Wuthering Fright is the third beautifully illustrated book in the Goth Girl series by Chris Riddell, sequel to Goth Girl and the Ghost of a Mouse and Goth Girl and the Fete Worse Than Death.

This is the third book in the Goth Girl series and, like the others, is an absolutely beautiful book to look at. From the hardback cover to the finish of the pages which show up metallic blue when the book is closed, to Chris Riddell's numerous illustrations along the way and not forgetting the extra'teeny weeny' book inside the back cover, this is a book which is a joy to hold and look at. Those who go on to read the book will not be disappointed either. Ada is looking forward to spending Christmas with her best friend, Emily, when she comes home from boarding school to stay at Ghastly-Gorm Castle, where her father is working on mysterious inventions. Sure enough, Emily arrives, as does her brother, but they both bring with them a number of friends who arrive at the Castle at the same time as Lord Goth and the competitors for his Literary Dog Show. The scene is thus set for mayhem from the various dogs and their owners (including Sir Walter Splott and his dog, Ivanhoe) but are these hounds responsible for the chewed shoes and paw prints in the snow? Clearly, there will not be a straightforward explanation and it takes the combined wisdom of a large number of literary legends to get to the bottom of the mystery. Children will be delighted with the fast-moving action and crazy characters whilst adults will enjoy picking up the literary jokes. Chris Riddell himself makes an appearance in his own book as 'Sir Christopher Riddle-of-the-Sphinx R.A.', the famous 'canine caricaturist'.' 224 pages / Ages 8+ / Reviewed by June Hughes, librarian.
