From the very beginning of this thoughtfully presented book, illustration and text combine perfectly to create a sense of adventure. The Contents page is shown as a map of the world with each location tagged with a red Google maps-style pin containing the relevant page number; the Introduction is on a piece of paper held against a map in the hands of an explorer as if preparing the reader for the travels ahead.

Offering information in concise, easily digestible chunks, the book is easy to navigate (even without an index) and perfect for dipping in and out of. Certain features are common to each location - a fact file, things to remember, who lives/ spends time here - allowing children to quickly compare and contrast the places they are reading about. Other information is more location specific. The section on the Arctic Circle contains instructions for building an igloo whilst in the Alps there is information about making your own trail mix. Some sections include short biographies about a significant individual and most contain information about the indigenous or First Peoples of the region. In every location information on ways to help that place is included, offering practical steps each individual can take to make a difference.

Not only is How to Survive Anywhere: Staying Alive in the World’s Most Extreme Places an excellent book for engaging independent readers, it would also be a useful addition to classrooms in relation to the geography curriculum. It encourages the reader to 'locate the world's countries' (perhaps using Google maps and adding their own 'pins') and understand their geographical similarities and differences, including biomes. The book also looks at space and to the future, offering plenty to discuss and debate. There is a wealth of information in these pages just waiting to be discovered.
