Reviews
Jane
I made the mistake of thinking Journey to Poo-topia (Poo Crew Adventures) was a graphic novel, i.e. a comic strip story. I now know to catalogue, shelve and recommend it as non-fiction, related to human anatomy, digestion and even technology. In a wacky but accurate way, it will enlarge children’s understanding of an otherwise rather 'icky', sometimes shunned, subject; one which nonetheless is of real interest.
I have no doubt this book will find enthusiastic readers, even if it does provoke some sniggering. And, were it to be used for teaching the digestive system, I can see Science becoming instantly more popular. By the closing pages, we've learnt how different foods are transformed by chemical and mechanical means in the human body (mostly - with brief note of animal, plant and fungal digestives processes). We've also seen the inner workings of the toilet from earliest times and the sewerage system.
All facts (barring the useful but 'boring' glossary) are served with a good dollop of humour. And there's even a 'draw your own Professor Poo and Ploppy' bonus bit at the end.
