Synopsis

The day Twig falls out of his nest, he meets a boy called Milo. Milo cares for Twig, building him a new nest in his home, tending to his broken wing and introducing him to his flock. Twig sings his appreciation to Milo as his wing heals, and they become the best of friends. But Twig is still a bird and soaring with Milo on his bike just isn't the same as spreading his wings in the air. He stops singing, leaving Milo with a hard decision about the last thing his best friend needs to heal.

Milo and Twig is a child-centred depiction of what it means when someone says, "If you love something, let it go."

When a little bird falls from his nest, he meets a boy called Milo who cares for him and calls him Twig. Milo tends to Twig's broken wing and in return, Twig shows him how to sing. But Twig misses the open skies and soon stops singing. Loving his friend and wanting him to be happy, Milo choses to set Twig free.

Milo and Twig is a heart-warming story about the power of unconditional love. Having rescued and tended to Twig, Milo is obviously very attached to his new companion and tries his hardest to make the little bird happy, lavishing him with care and attention. The friendship which develops between the two is delightful as they spend time together, enjoying themselves. However, Twig is meant to be free and languishes, despite the love which they share. Truly caring for his feathered friend means that Milo needs to set Twig free.

The story shows the importance of caring for others and making difficult decisions to ensure that our feelings don't dominate what is best for them. The illustrations are delightful, full of colour and energy, with plenty of details to notice and enjoy. Told from Twig's viewpoint, the story is perfect for developing empathy and awareness of the feelings of others.
