Reviews

Jo

Fans of Maz Evans will be thrilled to see the return of Elliot Hooper as he embarks on another madcap adventure - this time in Ancient Egypt as his adventures continue from the previous book, Oh Maya Gods. This volume, Oh Mummy Mia!, will sit beautifully alongside its companions and the gorgeous front cover is bound to appeal.

In this quest, the sun god has been kidnapped which spells doom for the universe. What then follows is a laugh-out-loud race against time. It is full of fun and moments of pulse-quickening peril and yes, it is full of Maz Evans's signature sense of fun and larger-than-life characters.

As with Maz Evans' previous titles, which were set in Ancient Greece, these new adventures do rely on a certain amount of prior historical knowledge from the reader in order to fully appreciate the nuances and puns. Although humorous throughout, the book can be quite heavy-going if you do not already possess some understanding of Egyptian gods and customs.

With this book there does need to be, therefore, a word of caution. It is not a book to pick up and run with as a means by which to hook children into the topic of Ancient Egypt. This is a book which needs to be read as a follow-on from Maz Evans's previous titles and will be best enjoyed by readers who can appreciate the clever word play and comical antics of the characters.
