Reviews

Linda

As an Upper Key Stage 2 teacher, I am always on the lookout for books that not only captivate my students, but also challenge them to think critically and empathetically. Peter Burns' Shadow Thieves is a standout addition to our classroom library. From the very first page, I was totally hooked.

The story follows 13-year-old Tom Morgan, who navigates the gritty streets of an alternate London, shining shoes and picking pockets to survive. When his friends are captured and sent to a brutal workhouse, Tom's desperation leads him to the enigmatic Corsair and an elite boarding school for thieves, nestled in the snowy Alps.

The premise alone is enough to spark the imagination of any young reader. The world-building in Shadow Thieves is truly unique. Burns crafts a vivid, immersive setting that blends the charm of classic literature with the excitement of modern fantasy. The alternate London is both familiar and fantastical, providing a rich backdrop for the story's events. The school for thieves, with its secretive corridors and complex hierarchies, offers endless opportunities for discussion and exploration in the classroom.

What sets this book apart is its gritty realism and the palpable sense of peril that permeates the narrative. The dangers Tom faces are intense and unrelenting, providing a thrilling experience that will resonate with readers. This sense of real peril not only keeps students engaged but also encourages them to consider the consequences of choices and the complexities of moral decisions.

I loved how the story balances action with character development. Tom is a relatable protagonist whose growth throughout the novel provides ample material for discussions about resilience, loyalty, and identity. The supporting characters are equally well-drawn, each contributing to the story’s depth and emotional impact.

I can't wait to see where Peter Burns takes this series next. Shadow Thieves is a compelling read that offers both entertainment and educational value. It's a book that will not only enthrall students but also provide a wealth of opportunities for teaching and discussion. For educators seeking a novel that combines adventure, moral complexity, and rich world-building, Shadow Thieves is an excellent choice. It's a story that will leave students eager for more and teachers excited to guide them through its layered narrative.
