Synopsis
In our old house, Ma told me there was nothing to be scared of. No monsters hiding behind doors, or in wardrobes, or under beds. She said there were no dark places at all. But in the new house, under my new bed, that's where I found Shadow.

Shadow is a book about every child's fantasy - good and bad; about the power of the mind to manifest fears, anxieties and even imaginary friends. In her old house, the girl in the story feels safe but in her family's new house, she finds Shadow under the bed.... In this story, Shadow is not an image to be frightened by but one that gives the girl in the story the courage and companionship to explore her new surroundings. The girl has conjured up Shadow but what she really seeks is the companionship of her mother. This is a lovely book to share with younger children as a way to explore and talk about things they may be fearful of or worried about. Children could bring in their comfort toys or objects or even draw their imaginary friends. Anastasia Suvorova's illustration of Shadow itself could be used as a stimulus to draw or make cut out silhouette pictures and of course allow children to explore and develop a greater understanding about shadows themselves and how they are formed. A lovely book of many layers. Picture book / Ages 5+ / Reviewed by Louise Gahan, teacher
