Gabriel Dylan has brought us another spine-chilling adventure from the Shiver Point squad in Shiver Point: Under A Howling Moon. Its Oli's birthday and he wants nothing more than to spend the weekend camping, exploring and telling spooky stories round the campfire with his best friends and his dad. The shiver point squad are all packed and ready to go, but on their way, they encounter the local ranger who advises them to camp at Howlmoor forest campsite instead of the woods, for their own safety.
On their first night Oli is awoken by a terrifying beast and the campsite has been completely wrecked, but Sophia and Mo are not convinced that Oli has really seen a beast and put it down to his overactive mind and lack of sleep. However, when they discover that Oli's dad is missing, things start to become strange. When they go into the woods to find him, what they find under the light of the moon is terrifying!
I really enjoyed the atmosphere and mood this book created and think the storyline will captivate the reader with its characters who have their own unique qualities. This book draws upon the themes of fear of the unknown and the importance of friendship. It creates a sense of mystery that the reader will find intriguing.
In the classroom, this would be a good example to use in English to show how to create mood, suspense and fear through setting and characterisation. Alternatively, it would be an excellent class story at the end of the day.
