Synopsis
A rescue story of love and trust between a boy and a dog from the talented author of Paws.
Matt is a football superstar. He can handle anything. Except lately his chest feels empty and his head is screaming. He can't concentrate in school or enjoy football any more, and he is so, so tired. When Matt stumbles across an abandoned dog, there's no doubt in his mind that he has to save him. But maybe the dog isn't the only one who needs help.

The Bravest Word is centred around a boy called Matt who, it would appear, has a lot to be grateful for. He has parents who love him, a group of friends who look out for him and a talent for football. However, Matt is overwhelmed by feelings of anger, irritation and sadness. He feels that school is overwhelming and he can't find the joy in football that he once felt. On top of all this, Matt feels tired down to his bones. Matt can't find the answers to explain how he feels and while the adults in his life can make suggestions, they can'’t make the feelings go away.
The reader shares Matt's experiences with him through the story and is as confused as Matt as to why he might be feeling as he does. This creates a great experience of empathy as we are just as confused and desperate for answers for the protagonist.
When Matt and his father take a walk to the woods, they come across an abandoned and neglected dog. Matt immediately makes a connection with the sad looking animal and, over time, the little dog (who Matt names Cliff in memory of his late grandfather) learns to trust Matt and a bond is forged between them. Matt can see in Cliff a need to be reassured, to trust and to heal and, gradually, he is able to reflect upon his own needs. And so a mutual healing can begin.
This is a story told with honesty and courage. It affirms that it is OK to not be OK. Matt realises that he is experiencing mental health issues and, as the title suggests, must summon up the courage to ask for help. The power of this book comes from its truthfulness. Matt is a boy with so much to offer and so much to be thankful for, but depression knows no boundaries.
This is a book that will resonate with children who are carrying the heavy burden of mental illness. It will speak out to those who are supporting others with mental health issues; it is one to share with children, parents and school staff.
