Synopsis
The city is starving but the farms are bursting with food. Something is very wrong.
In the aftermath of a riot turned lethal, city-kid Acker goes looking for law and order. After a farm truck is attacked in the city, farmgirl Dot sets off to find answers. When the two teens meet, they find common ground and a terrifying truth about the future. Someone has to confront reality . . . what's left of it . . . And it looks like it's them.
In this dramatic, thought-provoking, and prescient story, Mimi and Rachel imagine a world where AI, initially created to eradicate all human error, has gone disastrously wrong, endangering the survival of the human race.

Sue
When her father returns from attempting to deliver food to the city wounded and full of dire news, Dot leaves for the city, determined to find answers. Having been caught up in a riot over food in the city and unable to find his friend, Acker decides to go looking for help. Each on their own mission, they find each other and, together with little Bean, who lives near Acker, they quickly realise that something is very wrong; something is in control and someone has to do something about it.
There are many stories which present us with glimpses of often horrifying alternative or future worlds, but The Emptying feels terrifyingly close to home. In a world where AI has been used to eradicate human error, it is not only taking their jobs and controlling their lives, but is seeking to remove what is perceives as the root of all errors - humans themselves.
Incredibly thought-provoking, The Emptying explores the threats and possible consequences of the 'machines taking over', culminating in a provocative debate. As well as offering a very satisfying story, the book would make an excellent focus for debate and discussion - not only about AI - and is perfect for sharing with classes or book groups.
Dot and Acker are very relatable characters, very different personalities, but each personifying 'everyman', reinforcing the feeling that this could indeed be happening to any of us, anywhere. Dot tries to follow the rules, her belief in the system unshakeable - even in the face of her rebellious grandmother's opinions and actions and the mysterious disappearance of her mother. Acker, more of a rebel, flouts minor rules, much to his sister's horror, trying to live in the moment and ignore the hunger and worries of his daily life. Both are wonderfully flawed and complex humans - and make excellent challengers to 'Blinky' (you'll have to read the book to know what I mean!). Bean is probably my favourite character. She has a knack of seeing and understanding things in that way which children can have, offering a fresh, uncomplicated perspective on events and reminding the reader to never underestimate the young!
The Emptying is a very powerful and provocative read, offering far more to think about than can be contained in a simple review. Although somewhat unsettling, it combines a compelling story with memorable characters, making it one not to miss!
