The Bloomsbury Readers are a great set of books for young readers; the stories are accessible, relatable and easy to follow - The Great Cake Race is no different!

Jamila has recently moved to the Honeysuckle Estate when she hears about the Great Cake Race, but can she bake fast enough to beat Jasper, who has won the competition since it began? The story is broken into short chapters and it's an interesting read, not dry like some early readers can be!

This book is probably best for lower key stage (ages 7+) as Bloomsbury has branded it as a lime book band. It's a good chapter story for children who are independent readers or to be shared between adults and children. There are a few sketched pictures in the book and five book-related activities at the back which focus on recall, imagination, comprehension and understanding.
