Synopsis

Alice and her family are camping in Yorkshire, where her new stepdad is hoping to photograph puffins. Alice struggles to understand her stepdad's fascination with the seabirds, and finds it even harder dealing with her younger stepsister, Hattie, who takes all the attention.

When Alice tries to avoid Hattie by hanging back during a bike ride, she discovers a baby puffin huddled by a rock. It seems scared and all alone, but local volunteers have warned that it's dangerous for puffins to interact with humans. Is there any way that Alice can help the puffling return to the sea?

The Littlest Puffling is the wonderful new novel for young chapter book readers by Holly Webb. Holly has used all of her writing talent to create this stunning story which will captivate readers both young and old. The subject matter of younger siblings and blended families is one which the target audience are likely to be able to identify with.

Many of us dream of rescuing a baby animal, protecting it and supporting it to thrive, enabling it to be released and that is exactly what Alice is able to do. Printed on buff paper with carefully crafted illustrations, this would be the perfect book a person of any age, developing their confidence with chapter book.

In school this would be a beautiful text to share with a class, a reading for pleasure text or a group study text. This novel could be used to focus on plot line, character development, description or use of language. It is filled with emotion form the very first chapter. I am sure that this, like others in this series, will become firm favourites in homes, school and libraries. I look forward to seeing what wonderful animal based story Holly writes next.
