This delightful picture book features a host of characterful cats (and one cute mouse) participating in a range of festive activities. We are introduced to many cat varieties including alley cats, marmalades, Persians and tabbies. They experiment with wrapping presents, fancy dress, carol singing and snowball fights, none of which end particularly well. Many readers will recognise the mayhem caused when cats and Christmas decorations combine!

They are also depicted licking their lips, and performing acrobatics, intent on gaining access to several tasty items on the menu. The lively illustrations conjure up the temperament of the different cats in the various scenarios. The sheer fun of jumping into a box to explore the contents is clear to see, as is the grumpiness of the cats who have been unwillingly kitted out with reindeer antlers! I love the way that the illustrator conveys the movements of the cats and kittens as they stretch, prowl, climb and curl up in their beds.

This is also a great counting book, as the rhyming pages count up from one to twelve. The use of alliteration results in some very apt and enjoyable word pairings such as, merry marmalades and pacing pussycats. A lovely book to read aloud and to examine for the many finer details hidden in the pictures, not least the ever-present mouse!

This is a story that celebrates many Christmas traditions, even Santa on his sleigh, who puts in an appearance at the end. It is a book to savour in the anticipation of, and during, the festive season and beyond. It also celebrates felines, and cat lovers of all ages will find much to enjoy within these pages, possibly learning about different varieties of cats along the way.
