This book introduces the reader to Frog, or Tree Frog, to give him his full name, and we watch some of his everyday experiences in his natural habitat, the rainforest. But this is not a book for the passive reader; it is a fully interactive experience. We are encouraged to engage with Frog through the pages of the book and so become an active part of the story. For example, you can help Frog to jump, by shaking the book up and down. Only to discover, on the next page, that he has almost jumped out of the book altogether! The pages reveal a few more rainforest characters such as some buzzing flies, which make a delicious snack, and a slightly threatening toucan. Every page contains an invitation to the reader to carry out an action. There are flaps to lift, raindrops to count, sounds to make and a cheeky suggestion to stick out your tongue to remind Frog how to eat flies! So there is plenty to engage the reader. The pages depict the lush vegetation of the rainforest, the deep blue of the rainfall and the vivid oranges and yellows of the surroundings. Frog is an appealing character who seems to be finding his way in the world, with a little help. He has some amazing facial expressions, cleverly achieved by subtle changes to his features. From beginning to end, you can become fully immersed in Frog's rainforest world, learning a little about its diversity along the way. Picture book / Ages 3+ / Reviewed by Judith Greenall, librarian
