Synopsis
There are billions of creatures on this earth, but there is only one YOU! This book celebrates the myriad ways in which young grow up on this wild, wonderful planet, and the journey we all take to find our true place in the world. It shows the diversity in the make-up of families, whilst also teaching children lots of fun animal facts! It was edited with the help of Beth Cox, a specialist Inclusion and Equality Consultant, so approaches these topics with sensitivity and empathy.

What a clever book this is! On our initial reading we discussed the rhythmic poetry throughout the book and the theme of animal families in all their diversity. A second reading allowed us to explore the abundant scientific vocabulary of the information text about each animal. Who knew the parenting of baby animals varied so much? Our final discussion linked those animal families with human families and how all families are different. The final message in We Are Family is 'we all find our place', leaving the reader with a sense of hope for the future; particularly important to our current children who have faced such uncertainty in their short lives recently.
Jenna Herman's stunning collage-like illustrations support the children in learning what the animals in the book were. Our older children were really taken with the pangolins, leading to some great independent research. I cannot recommend this book highly enough for PSHE in school. Well worth buying a copy or two. This would be a great book to use across school, there are so many talking points included.
