Elvi has two mums, two mums she adores just the same. Nicholas wants to know which is her 'real' mum. 'They're both my real mums' Elvi explains. And when Nicholas still protests to know which one, the 'real' one, the one that had Elvi in her tummy, Elvi helps in giving him lots of humorous clues.

Her real mum can pull a car with her teeth, she speaks fluent gorilla, writes in a secret language only whales can understand and can cartwheel up mountains. But, Nicholas still can't work it out. Elvi finally gives in and explains to Nicholas in the best way she knows how; her real mum is the one that holds her tight when she's scared, kisses her goodnight and tucks her into bed.  Nicholas replies 'but don't both your mums do that?', already knowing the answer; yes, they both do - and that is exactly the point. Both of her mothers are her REAL mum.

This is a gorgeous picture book! It is a touching celebration of non-traditional families and is light-hearted in its approach to exploring same-sex couples for young children. I love that this story has been so cleverly thought about, that it is understandable and age appropriate for young children, nurturing curiosity without preaching. The beautiful illustrations provide lots for the children to explore and discuss, building a sense of awareness and empowering children in LGBTQ families.

A refreshing read, comforting and heart-warming. Definitely one that I will be sharing with my class.
