We have two sets of five copies of Karen McCombie's new historical fiction book, Little Bird Flies, to give away. Set in Scotland in the 1860s, this powerful story covers themes of empowerment and hope against the backdrop of the Highland Clearances.

We spoke with author Karen McCombie to find out more about what inspired the story and how she researched it, and you can read her Q&A via the link, below. Little Bird Flies is aimed at readers aged 9 - 12 years and follows Bridie, a crofter's daughter who lives with her father and sisters on the remote Scottish island of Tornish. Bridie loves the island but also has a secret desire for adventure, and to leave Tornish for the New World. When a new Laird arrives on the island and is cruelly oppressive to his tenants, the escape that Bridie dreamed of takes on a new urgency. Little Bird Flies tackles many questions around Scottish history, belonging and empowerment and the backdrop, of a remote Scottish island and a Scottish town in 1860 is fascinating. Email your school's details to [email protected] if you would like to enter the free draw for a set of ten copies of Little Bird Flies. We will notify the winners after the draw at the end of January.
