Synopsis

Frog is going to jump this log. And it will be easy . . . or so he thinks! Bursting with braggadocio, misplaced bravado, and some truly unforgettable sportswear, Frog's frustration builds as his feeble efforts fall short. Will he ever clear the log? And what awaits him on the other side . . ?

Author Stephanie Stansbie's pared-back, confident text leaps off the page alongside debut illustrator Jack Viant's bright, expressive artwork in this crackingly funny picture book. Look out for the satisfying twist at the end and a subtle lesson on misplaced arrogance.

Perfect for fans of the fabulously subversive humour found in picture books by Jon Klassen, Chris Haughton, and Lane Smith. Children and adults alike are guaranteed to be jumping to read about this this bold, boastful Frog again and again.

Frog has decided that he is going to jump over the log. It will be easy and he will be brilliant. However, things don't go according to plan and no matter how much he procrastinates or how frustrated he gets, he remains on the wrong side of the log. And if he succeeds, what is in store on the other side?

I am Going to Jump This Log is a fabulously funny story about one frog's boastful ambition. Frog is brimming with self-confidence to the point of arrogance as he views his challenge - the log - and sets out to conquer it. Unfortunately, his confidence is misplaced, leading to a series of unfortunate events. Even when he has accomplished his goal, a new challenge awaits!

The illustrations are absolutely delightful, allowing the reader to share the joke. They will notice that whilst Frog is bragging and posing other creatures, big and small, are successfully going over the log! There are so many details to spot and the different layouts add lots of interest.

Frog's expressions are wonderful, making it easy for those sharing the story to pause and explore his thoughts and emotions. The story is perfect for discussing the ways in which Frog might have expressed his confidence without appearing so boastful and therefore managing his disappointment and frustration better when he was not able to jump the log, particularly as he sees others being successful. The quiet kindness of the little bird who helps Frog to achieve his goal is also worth noting!

For teachers, the book is a real gift, offering plenty to discuss and enjoy, but also lots of opportunities for art/craft work (jumping frogs, flying birds etc) as well as writing and drama outcomes. I hope Frog (and his friend, Snail!) star in some more adventures soon!
