Reviews

Florence - Age 13

This is a fast paced, exciting book that will keep you on the edge of your seat. I enjoyed the science parts of the book and found it to be a great read. I discovered lots of things about science that I didnt know about. I think the book would appeal to anyone who loves science, but it is such an interesting tale that anyone who enjoys adventure and thriller style books would appreciate it. It is a real page-turner and I would definitely recommend it to anyone over age 11, boys and girls, who have a passion for science and adventure.

I thought the book had a great story line and a thrilling climax. I also liked the fact that there was a lot of scientific information in the book which for a science nerd like me made it even better. Things that I disliked were the fact that sometimes the author deviated from the main story line and it got quite boring. I think a little more character development would be good. In conclusion I think this book is absolutely fantastic and would recommend it to any young person who loves reading or has a love of scientific knowledge or likes action adventure books.

I think a person who enjoys science-fiction and drama type books would really like 'Itch'. Sometimes the names where forgettable and in some cases too similar. I would hope Simon Mayo writes another book, perhaps a sequel to Itch, of the same style. Simon Mayo delivers a contrast to other books as the hero doesnt have an exploding phone up his sleeve nor amazing super powers. I also really liked the fact that the characters were funny and would do realistic actions. For instance there's no jumping across sky-scrapers here. When this book is released I would definitely buy it and Im sure many others would too. Simon used exciting words to keep you hooked from the first page. And the best bit is that you can learn from it. For instance keeping phosphorus near fire is not the best idea. I would hope that people that wouldn't enjoy reading as much as I do would read this book and feel like they wanted to try others. I really enjoyed this book and I'm really glad I chose to review it.

It is a thrilling book full of adventure and action. Anyone who likes Science will find it interesting. Simon Mayo is as good an author as he is a DJ if not better. All in all it was a really great book. It is one of the best books I have read.

To be completely honest when faced with reading Itch, I was not all that enthusiastic, believing it to be a second rate offering from yet another celebrity. Well I owe Simon Mayo a huge apology. This book is fantastic. Read. The story line is fast paced and full of action-packed adventure. The story is set in Cornwall and is about a young boy who wishes to collect all the chemical elements and inadvertently manages to get his hands on one that proves to be very valuable and explosive if in the wrong hands. All the characters are engaging and convincing and varied. The writing flows naturally and has the reader hooked from the start. The only slight criticism I could possibly make is that at times the dialogue seemed stilted, and very occasionally, the plot detail is laboured. However, even given those slight reservations, I thoroughly enjoyed this book and couldn't wait to see how Itch's predicament would be resolved. Needless to say, like all good writers, Simon Mayo kept us guessing right to the very end and even then has kept a few loose ends up his sleeve. Will there be a sequel? I sincerely hope so because I will certainly read it. Simon Mayo has an undoubted talent for writing and children's literature could certainly do with a few more writers of his calibre.
