Synopsis

Why do people migrate? Who were the first travellers in history? And where will we humans travel to next?

Since the dawn of time, people have travelled to distant lands for many different reasons; to escape war, famine or injustice, to find work, or to simply see new sights and have an adventure. But everyone who migrates does it to seek a brighter future.  A World Full of Journeys tells some of the most fascinating stories of migration throughout history. From the very first humans who left Africa almost 70,000 years ago and moved around the world, to immigrants welcomed to America at Ellis Island, this book is packed with fascinating tales of human triumph.

Beautifully illustrated with bright pictures and maps detailing these migrants' journeys bring these stories to life. From Viking sea traders and Roman armies marching through Europe to Huegenot refugees fleeing persecution from the Catholic church and migrants travelling from the Caribbean to Britain as part of the Windrush Generation, this book explores the fascinating stories of the people who have crossed the world.

With chapters including Africa, Oceania, Europe and the Americas, this book looks all across the world to tell the full story of our journeys throughout history.  You'll discover that every single journey has the capacity to change the world.

The World Full of... series is a collection of beautiful hardback story treasuries. Also available from the series: A Year Full of Stories, A World Full of Animal Stories, A Stage Full of Shakespeare Stories, A World Full of Dickens Stories, A World Full of Spooky Stories, A Year Full of Celebrations and Festivals, A Bedtime Full of Stories and A World Full of Nature Stories.

Reviews

Sharon

Class 11 started our exploration of A World full of Journeys and Migrations by looking at the section labelled Europe where a "small tribe of Italians", otherwise known as the Romans, were described. This double page spread discusses the extent of the empire across Europe, as well as the Romans' much feted engineering. The migration of these building skills, ideas and culture is beautifully illustrated by Christopher Corr.

J aged 9 said that he wished he could be transported around by slaves like the Roman in the picture, which generated a heated debate about slavery within class.  The later pages detailing the Story of Brick Lane was really interesting, and prompted Class 11 to investigate the streets in our city that have seen waves of immigration into them over the years.

The whole book discusses journeys and migrations for each of the continents as well as a final section looking at the world and beyond. I like how the book looks at historical, current and future journeys. The obvious links with a primary school topic of journeys go without saying, however, this book gives a broader picture of the fact that migration is nothing new… it has always, and will continue to happen. It is possibly the reasons for movement which change over time.
