Synopsis

The highly anticipated fourth book in the bestselling and award-winning Supernatural Investigations series that began with Amari and the Night Brothers!  Perfect for readers aged 8+ and fans of Skandar, Percy Jackson and Nevermoor.

In the wake of the Bureau of Supernatural Investigations' war with Dylan Van Helsing and the magicians, Amari Peters has stepped back from being a Junior Agent to spend the school year as a normal kid.  But now she's faced with a decision: return to the Bureau and join an elite new agent programme - or retire for good, which would mean safety, but also losing her memories of the supernatural world.

Soon she finds that she may not have a choice. A deadly new curse is threatening the supernatural and mortal worlds as people are slowly becoming machines beneath their skin. Hundreds of cases have been cropping up with no cure in sight. And when the curse hits someone close to Amari, it's up to her to get to the bottom of this deadly mystery - even if it means trusting an old enemy.

Reviews

Jennifer

The fourth book in this mesmerising, magical series, Amari and the Metalwork Menace is just as fantastic and fantastical as the previous three books. I am a huge fan of the Amari series and the supernatural world-building that author BB Alston excels at.

Amari has stepped away from her role as an Agent at the Bureau of Supernatural Investigations, to have a normal year at high school. Now it is decision time; take early retirement, and leave her memories and magic behind forever, or return to the Bureau and the dangers, traumas and personal losses that Amari has survived and had to suffer before.

Again, the first-person narrative, puts the reader right into the mind of Amari, her emotions, experiences and turmoil at what path to take next in life. When a new hex threatens to overwhelm humans and turn them into machines, Amari's friends themselves are in danger and she must choose whether to face enemy malevolence once more.

Exciting and fast-paced throughout; the reader is plunged into the Bureau's competition to find the best Junior Special Agent. The real stakes are much higher as the numbers cursed by the Menace grow each day. It will take Amari and her loyal team all their supernatural skills to find the origins and culprit of this new evil force. Loyalties and bonds are set to be tested like never before; best friend Elsie and Amari's connection becomes emotionally fragile and Amari must decide whether supreme enemy, Dylan, can be trusted to help save humanity when all else fails.

Full of resilient, resourceful and determined young characters, Amari and the Metalwork Menace is a powerful and positive quest of hope, trust and redemption.

Stylishly written in a modern magical setting, this book blends technological sci-fi effortlessly with older, inherited magic and illusions. Heartfelt and warming, and packed with perils, book four ends on a real emotional roller coaster and leaves the reader breathless for more.
