Synopsis

Amy Curry is having a terrible year. Her mother has decided to move all the way across the country and needs Amy to drive their car from California to the East Coast. There's just one problem: since the death of her father, Amy hasn't been able to get behind the wheel of a car. Enter Roger, the son of an old family friend, who turns out to be unexpectedly cute... and dealing with some baggage of his own.

Meeting new people and coming to terms with her father's death were not part of Amy's plans for the road trip. But then neither was driving on the Loneliest Road in America, seeing the Colorado Mountains, visiting diners, dingy motels and Graceland. But as they drive, and she grows closer to Roger, Amy finds that the people you least expected are the ones you need the most - and that sometimes you have to get lost in order to find your way home.

Amy Curry's year couldn't get much worse. Her father has been killed in a car accident, her twin brother is in rehab and her mother is moving the family home from California to Connecticut. Since the death of her father Amy has been unable to drive so her mother has arranged for the young son of a family friend to drive her on a very structured route. Once the journey is started it becomes clear that Roger has issues of his own to deal with and that the journey will help Amy come to terms with her father's death. Amy and Roger quickly divert from the original route and begin a road-trip that will include Graceland, the Colorado Mountains and the Loneliest Road in America. Along the way their friendship gradually turns into romance - as we knew it would. This is a lovely quirky novel, full of likeable and believable characters. It's a story that makes you laugh and cry and is as much a journey for the reader as it is for the two main characters. The book is full of receipts, photographs and lists that show us Roger and Amy's journey. It also has a wonderful range of play-lists for the different stages of their journey which are as wide ranging and quirky as the story itself. This is the author's first novel and I look forward to her next.
