Armadillo and Hare is a collection of wonderful, whimsical stories about our odd-couple eponymous friends and the other resident of the Big Forest. A departure from Jeremy Strong's usual more mad-cap style, Armadillo and Hare is a gentle, calming collection perfect for bedtime reading.
Armadillo is chubby and grumpy, Rabbit is energetic and excitable, but together they make the perfect kindly pair. Each chapter covers a different adventure, from finding Armadillo a hobby, to planning a birthday party for Nobody, to helping Jaguar find a friend he doesn't want to eat. The style is charming, with wry humour and perfectly pitched illustrations. The most obvious reference points are Winnie the Pooh and Wind in the Willows, but this also put me in mind of Johnny Morris' Bedtime Stories.
Armadillo and Hare deserves to become a classic, and I hope there are many more adventures to come.
