Destiny Ink: Baking Mix-Up is the newest addition to the fantastic Destiny Ink series by Adeola Sokunbi. This highly illustrated chapter book is perfectly pitched at the early chapter book reader with black and white illustrations which add detail, magic and drama whilst making the step away from picture books clear. Word choice has been carefully made throughout the story to ensure that it remains accessible yet stretches the readers vocabulary and keeps their interest.
Each chapter is action-packed and leaves you wanting to read the next one to see what happens. The plot line focuses on drama, disappointment and how to overcome it, linked with family friendship and fun. It is relatable to the reader and is a popular addition to our reading for pleasure area. It has been lovely to hear the children recommending it to their friends and discussing that they like the level of action in it. They have said that they feel emotionally linked to the character and feel sad for her when things go wrong but that means that they feel happy when it works out. The children liked that they could relate to the story and that it was not scary and felt real. They too like baking with their friends.
A beautifully written early chapter book which my early readers love. There is no better accolade than a story that gets children both reading and talking about books, as the children in my class have done.
