Jane
For those unfamiliar with Dungeon Runners, there are some initial, helpful introductions at the start of the third book in the series, Dungeon Runners Level 3: Ocean Chase; to the commentators, to our regular heroes Kit, Thorn and Sandy, and to their opponents.
As the intrepid threesome (plus Pinchy the Crab) embark upon this latest competition, they look none too confident in their bogey-coloured tabards and armbands, although some of the other teams - as depicted by the skilled pen of Joe Todd-Stanton's - don't look entirely battle-ready.
The numerous drawings put into pictures what began in Kieran Larwood’s fantastic imagination and perfectly complement his easy writing style, which moves the adventure along at pace so that young readers are never bored. Rather, they are taken on a nail-biting journey which could end in winners' glory, but equally in failure or disaster, if the Narghouls and cheats get the upper hand.
Perhaps surprising, however, is that the team we’re all gunning for, our very own Triple Trouble, are willing to sacrifice triumph for the sake of helping fellow contestants in need. And that's part of their appeal and the book's (non-moralising) message: winning teams are not just skilful and clever, they bravely face their fears and put kindness before kudos.
This is another great little book from a creative duo, published by Nosy Crow who know how to make the printed word accessible and attractive. Those seven- to nine-year-olds who are eager for the promised next episode, Fang Attack, are left with a creative activity of their own, a nice touch to ease the disappointment of reaching the end and having to wait.
Dungeon Runners: Level 3: Ocean Chase could make a fun class or small group read, although the illustrations are best enjoyed close-up, in a cosy book corner or bedroom.
