A lovely wintery story for little readers! This book follows the familiar pattern of Five Little Ducks, but with penguins instead. Young children will definitely enjoy the predictability of how many penguins might be next and the amount they are supposed to find as the countdown happens.

My little boy enjoyed predicting the descending numbers but we really enjoyed the flaps that go along with that; on each page, you have to lift the flaps to try to find the right amount of penguins. The flaps are also a good way for children to develop their fine motor skills by peeling each one up.

The illustrations are beautifully dainty and delicate, and depict lots of different animals doing fun wintery activities such as sledging, ice skating and building snowmen. Children will enjoy spotting these activities and talking about their own experiences of each of these.

Our favourite spread was the final one where all of five of the penguins appear beneath a beautiful Christmas tree. It then shows them all enjoying Christmas day together and sharing gifts. This would provide a good opportunity to talk about the different emotions of mummy penguin throughout the book and how pleased they all are to be back together.
