Frida Kahlo is from The Little People, Big Dreams series. This series is based on the lives of inspirational women who have changed the world. This is the story of Frida Kahlo a little girl born in Mexico. She was born differently from others but that didn't stop her. When she was young she was in a terrible accident - to help her get better she drew and painted pictures. When she was better she wanted to show her pictures to the world, even when she was ill. Now her work is recognised around the world and she is an inspiration to many women. The book has been beautifully put together and the illustrations are fantastic. The story has been put together in a way that they are both meaningful but accessible to children across a variety of ages. I think these books would be beneficial both at home and in school as the books teach valuable life lessons. Picture book / Ages 7+ / Reviewed by Lauren Maidman, teacher.

The 'Little People, Big Dreams' series are a collection of beautifully bound books that tell the stories of many famous faces, showing their incredible achievements which began 'as a child with a dream'. This simple picture book tells children about the childhood and key life events of Frida Kahlo. This book is great for introducing the artist to younger children, it follows the importance of being different and practise in order to succeed. Whereas the simple illustrations are charming in the other books of this series, I feel it's a slight limitation here - as Kahlo's art just doesn't look as impressive as it is in real life. There are other 'artist biography' books for children that also tell life stories, but don't compromise on the quality of the images. This is a simple story that is easy for children to follow; each page has limited text and uses simple language. It would be good for children who have expressed an interest in art, queried who Kahlo was, or simply want to know about more female artists! 32 pages / Ages 7+ / Reviewed by Lizi Coombs, teacher.
