How to Save a Life (Little Experts) could be the most important book a child ever reads. Indeed, many adults (myself included) will learn from it, both facts they hitherto didn't know and, more significantly, what to do in an emergency. The repeated refrain is 'stay calm, stay safe yourself, and get help', but the advice extends to specific practical actions such as using a ruler to remove a bee sting, having a fire escape route planned and laying cling film over burns.

Personally, I alighted on fire and water safety, making a mental note of what different coloured flags signify (when next at the beach) and to check if a door feels warm to the touch before opening it (in the event of a suspected house fire). I very much like the inclusion of anecdotes from Dr Ronx's own life and medical practice, and of precautions to take - not just first aid to give or instructions to follow (useful though these undoubtedly are).

I also think the author has done well, firstly, to give some real-life examples of children whose calm, quick, wise actions are known to have saved lives. Secondly, they have made the text clear, succinct and child-friendly without talking down to young readers. And thirdly, the scenarios chosen are those which children are mostly likely to experience.

The benefit of presenting all of this information is enhanced by various design elements: clear, succinct text in well-defined sections, and striking modern graphics. There is also a useful glossary. This is definitely a book to promote widely in primary school settings, to all ages, or even in an assembly (e.g. at the start of a school holiday or in class, if, for example, a pupil is known to have a serious allergy or asthma).
