Dr Zoe Williams, NHS Lifesaver and television presenter, introduces this uplifting non-fiction book, showcasing the lives of a range of different heroes and the amazing work they do. All 12 heroes are real life emergency service workers from across the world and are introduced to us in the first double page spread of the book.
Each hero takes it in turn to talk about a day in their lives, the work they do, the incredible skills they have and the important equipment they need to save a life. The book gives a bird's eye view of all the equipment needed to do their jobs, alongside comic strip panels to offer a fascinating insight of life on the front line.
Life Savers is a brilliant illustrated book to celebrate our everyday superheroes! The illustrations are bright and colourful and form a great starting point for discussions. The small text means that as an independent research book it is more appropriate for the upper end of the age range guidance. Although my Reception children enjoyed discussing the illustrations and were interested in looking at all of the equipment, it was my Year 2 children who wanted to find out more about the equipment once they had read the labels.
This book has been particularly relevant for teaching and learning this year and we have woven it into all areas of the curriculum - comparisons with nurses in the past, gender equality in the workplace, making women 10% braver, superheroes!
