Synopsis

A hilarious new series from Clara Vulliamy, the author-illustrator of Dotty Detective, about grumpy cat Marshmallow Pie and his reluctant pursuit of stardom. Perfect for fans of Toto the Ninja Cat or The Secret Life of Pets.

Marshmallow Marmaduke Vanilla-Bean Sugar-Pie Fluffington-Fitz-Noodle is a big, fluffy (and grumpy) cat. He LOVES the easy life: lazing in the sunshine, eating Shrimp Crunchies and annoying Buster, the dog downstairs.  His new owner, Amelia Lime, has grand plans to turn Pie into a STAR... But Pie thinks he's a star already, to be honest!  Told in the hilarious voice of Marshmallow Pie himself, his mischievous antics are illustrated throughout in black and white.

Reviews

Jane

Whether or not readers are owned by a cat, they will enjoy the references to typically feline behaviour. Marshmallow Pie (Pie for short) exudes pride and self-esteem and was born to privilege, so it's no wonder he is destined for stardom.

But the journey to fame features some hilarious hiccups. It is also hotly contested, not least by Buster, the dog from the flat downstairs. Pie considers him enemy no.1 and blames him for everything, but even Pie has a softer side to his nature. When Buster gets little comfort from his own expensive toys, Pie gives up his claim on cuddly Squeaker. When Pie's owner Amelia Jane is sad, he is sad.

It seems, in this case, that cats and their humans really do take after each other, for Amelia Jane is similarly kind-hearted. And so, this story is not only fun and eventful, but also a subtle lesson in what makes for true greatness: care and compassion. Quiet and unassuming, or oozing self-confidence, everyone needs these qualities to shine.

The striking cover will immediately appeal, as will this gifted author's own illustrations and the inventive use of different fonts and text presentation. Indeed, it is the drawings which, I think, give this book its star quality. I also think that the way Marshmallow Pie confides in his admiring readers is a clever device.

It's a title I shall definitely be recommending to any Key Stage 1 child who is able to read independently, as well as to parents and teachers for sharing one-to-one and in small group settings where the pictures can be easily seen.
