Wendy

How to Help a Hedgehog and Protect a Polar Bear a lovely, bright and appealing non-fiction book which has been written in conjunction with the National Trust. It gives lots of simple and practical ways children can help protect wildlife and the environment. It ranges from common animals children will find in their gardens or nearby fields and woods such as butterflies, hedgehogs and doves to more exotic animals found further afield, such as snow leopards, orangutans and cicadas.

Each page presents key facts about a different habitat and includes an illustrated fact file about the animals who live there. It also suggests ways children can help look after that habitat, such only eating fish that are included on the Sustainable Fish List to prevent stocks becoming depleted or using a Bag for Life. The illustrations break up the text nicely and feature a diverse group of children so that all readers feel included.

Due to the amount of information on each page I would suggest this book is suitable for supported reading with Year One's but will more likely be enjoyed by independent readers aged 7 to 10. It would make a perfect gift for the junior environmentalist in your life or a valuable addition to a school library or classroom bookcase.
