This book looks at extreme weather conditions. Big Weather is full of interesting facts, supported by some amazing pictures. The book explains extreme weather conditions in a number of ways - Q and A, diagrams, sections of text, fact files - which makes the subject easy to understand. The book would be ideal for guided reading sessions as it offers plenty of opportunities for discussion in terms of the layout and features of a non-fiction text as well as content. It would also be an ideal starting point for further research on weather conditions and would appeal to older children reading at a younger age. It would also make an interesting book for a home reader as there is a lot to discuss and explore. Although it could offer more development in places, the book is full of clear explanations illustrated by diagrams and photographs. The glossary clearly explains unfamiliar vocabulary. A world map locating places discussed would also be a useful addition. 32 pages / ORT Book Band 12 / Ages 8/9+ / Reviewed by Sue Wilsher, teacher.
