Reviews

Lucy

A wonderful series for young storytellers! This series allows children to tell their own stories through different environments and experiences. At the beginning, it explains how to use the books by reading the question at the top of each page and then choosing their answer from the options using the pictures and words. It also encourages children to talk about the choices they make in as much detail as they can which will help to develop their reasoning and widen their vocabulary.

In Pirate Adventure, children can choose a hero to go on their adventure with from many characters including a first mate, a toddler, a goat, a skeleton woman, a prince and a captain. Some of the characters are traditional 'pirate' characters whereas others are characters you would find in many different genres and environments. They then choose what they're going to get dressed up in for their adventure, the destination they would like to head for, the equipment they'd like to take with them and how they will travel there.

The book continues as the reader can choose their journey as well as the terrible incidents they might overcome on their way. The structure of the book also means children can retell many different stories without getting bored.

I love the layout of this book - it creates a huge amount of freedom for children to tell their own stories while giving them ideas to help their imagination and a structure to support their story. The book has colourful illustrations to help to bring it to life. I prefer this book to some of the others in the series as it seems more realistic to the pirate world the readers is exploring. There are still some slightly more random additions but it seems more focussed than some of the other books in the series. A lovely book to help children to bring their imaginations and story telling to life!
