Laugh out loud funny! During my teacher training, as a project, I created a picture book of my own. I was rather impressed with it to be honest. It was about a slug that becomes a superhero. So, imagine my surprise when I saw a book turn up on my doorstep that was all about just that! I thought nah it won't be as good as mine (big headedly). But oh my goodness, it is so much better. It is hilarious. Both my children loved it. I haven't taken it into school yet because I was eager to tell you all how awesome this book was right away! Super Snail, by Elys Dolan, is one of those books that you would be reluctant to lend out. It will be a massive hit for any superhero or comic book fans. It is all about Kevin, an ordinary slug. But by night Kevin dons his snail shell and becomes SUPER SNAIL! He is fearless, invincible and - slimy! He has all the right equipment to be a true superhero, but it is one of those cases of 'all the gear but no idea'. He goes on a journey - with varying levels of success - to find out how to join the League of Heroes. All the while his nonchalant butler is there to offer a hilariously timed snack or beverage: 'Not now Wilfred!'. However, Kevin's lack of speed, arms, and a bottom cause some issues. Kevin starts to feel despondent. It is not until Susan from the office is kidnapped that Kevin fulfils his true potential and realises that has a hidden power that helps him save the day and become the most awesome superhero ever. A fantastic read that I would recommend for children aged 4-7. The story contains the message to never give up on your dream in a well-illustrated and humorously written way. Definitely in my top five picture books. Picture book / Ages 3+ / Reviewed by James Hewish, teacher
