The Prehistoric Times gives its reader an insight to the age of the dinosaur, providing a light-hearted overview of the species in its unique newspaper format. With easy access to smart phones, tablets and laptops, I no longer have the need to read a 'real newspaper'. The days when most families have their daily news delivered first thing every morning are a thing of the past. Most Primary age children rarely see a newspaper so when as a teacher we try to introduce non-chronological reports, then things become so much more difficult than years ago. This book provides a number of examples of non-chronological report writing. Its short articles about dinosaurs; their behaviours, food and habitats, effectively demonstrate the power of selecting the right vocabulary to create impact, interest and still include sufficient detail to address the subject intended. I have no doubt that this book would appeal to children and adults of all ages; providing a good balance of laughs, stomach-turning detail and factual information, however because of the complexity of some of the vocabulary used it would probably suit the reading ability of 8 years upwards (KS2). I love the way this book maintains the newspaper format throughout, with headlines, short articles, quizzes and activities. The headlines on the front cover will appeal to young minds providing a 'sneak preview' of what's inside: 'The Newspaper for Discerning Dinosaurs', 'Meet Spinky the Spinosaurus', so even though many children are attracted by the glossy, high colours of new titles, the novelty of the newspaper design will also grab the attention of young readers. The Prehistoric Times is part of a series by Stella Gurney and is an appealing 'salute' to the old fashioned hardcopy news. A go-to example of non-chronological report writing that would benefit any primary classroom, providing no end of interesting facts in a concise and humorous way. Published in association with the Natural History Museum, The Prehistoric Times is packed with facts, puzzles and activities. I am sure that this book will keep its reader occupied for hours. 32 pages / Ages 8+ / Reviewed by Sam Phillips, teacher.
