Reviews

Terry

This book has a very positive message for all boys/men - everyone has feelings and sharing those feelings is good. There is very little text and it would be suitable for KS1 pupils. The pictures have a very 1960s feel to them and are very stylized in bold blocks of colour showing a variety of 'tough guys'. Each picture depicts a different type of tough guy we have wrestlers, spacemen and pirates. Some of the children did not like the pictures and wanted to point out defects, such as that the feet are too small; other enjoyed the vibrant images. The book ends with a touching picture of a boy and his father sharing a book together. The brevity of the text means it could be easily shared but the message resonates. Everyone has feelings, no matter how brave and fearless they might seem. This book explores how important it is for those feelings to be expressed. Such an important message is contained in this story. Each page shows a different 'tough guy' and emotions that they are feelin g- missing family, being lonely, sadness at the death of an animal. The pictures are big, bold and colourful, instantly attracting attention. The text is kept to a minimum, allowing the illustrations to fill the gaps and giving the clear message that it is perfectly acceptable for tough guys to cry. The final image shows two tough guys - father and son - sharing a book in a room full of toys relating to the characters in the story, both crying and not ashamed to do so. Great message conveyed in a simple, yet powerful way! Picture Book / Ages 3+ / Reviewed by Sue Wilsher, teacher.
