This large-format book by the creators of 'Maps' takes us - as the double-sided cover suggests - through the Earth's secrets, underground and under the sea. These are huge areas to mine for information and since we don't usually spend much time exploring these places, there is a lot of useful information on the pages - from how long tree roots can grow and how deep animals dig their burrows to giants of the deep sea, oil platforms and submarines. Each spread is dedicated to specific subjects eg root vegetables, animal burrows, caves, fossils etc and is beautifully illustrated with cut-throughs of the subject. The colours are muted and the spreads clearly arranged and labelled - there is just so much to explore on each of them. Some of my favourites included seeing how peanuts grow, the layers of a mine and the metro. Really interesting and easily digestible facts. 108 pages / Ages 8+ / Reviewed by Elen White.
