When tiny Fern hatches from a lone egg deep within an ancient forest, she sets out to discover her destiny. Surely among all these dinosaurs, some small and quick, some big and tall, there must be an answer to her question. Will Fern ever find out who she is and where she came from?A touching story about finding your place in the world, wherever that may be.

When I'm Big by Ella Bailey depicts a tiny dinosaur called Fern setting out to find her place in the world. Fern is frustrated by her small size compared to the world around her and keeps waiting until she is bigger to be able to do more. The story goes full circle and Fern learns many things over the course of the story.

Beautiful illustrations take the reader along with the story. There is much to discover in the pastel tones of this book and I found myself going back several times to explore the pictures. The layout is considered carefully on each page with the text placed to draw the reader's eye and enhance the language.

There is some brilliant language in this book such as 'pondering', 'stumbled' and 'squelch'. Many teachers would find classroom applications for this book but equally it is one to be enjoyed and poured over at bedtime. Simply wonderful and moving.
