Rock and Roll are so very different. Rock hates attention whilst Roll loves being in the spotlight. They come from such different worlds . . . and yet, they have so much in common. They might come from very different places and have very different appearances, but there is much which connects them!

With its bold pictures and playful characters, Rock and Roll is a delightful book, showing that whilst people might be different, they can still have so much in common! Perfect for sharing at home or at school, the seemingly simple text offers a very profound and important message.

Presented quite literally on different pages, grey Rock and golden brown Roll seem to have absolutely nothing in common, yet eagle-eyed readers will spot the similarity between their bright eyes and sweet smiles from the off! As the differences between they are listed, it seems as if there is no common ground between them, but 'hang on . . .' the second half of the story focuses on the many ways in which they are like minded. Children can easily relate this idea to themselves and their different friends. The book also reminds the reader that Rock can sometimes be soft and that Roll can be strong, a lovely touch, recognising that people should not be stereotyped!

The illustrations are delightful, full of gentle humour, and the text is a pleasure to read aloud. The story offers the perfect excuse to indulge in some rock painting or bun decorating, allowing for opportunities to discuss how people who appear similar can also be different! A very lovely story!

Rock and Roll is a charming, humorous picture book that offers young readers a gentle lesson about friendship, differences, and the importance of looking beyond first impressions. With its playful tone and expressive characters, the story is well‑suited for early childhood and primary classrooms.

Rock and Roll couldn't be more different; at least at first glance. Rock is sturdy, quiet, and prefers to stay out of the spotlight. Roll is soft, expressive, and thrives on attention. As the story unfolds, children discover that despite their contrasting personalities, the two share meaningful similarities: they work well under pressure, they enjoy being part of a team, and they love dressing up.

Their journey highlights how assumptions can be misleading and how friendships often grow from unexpected connections. This book would work well in an Early Years classroom to support social and emotional learning as it explores themes around empathy, celebrating differences and understanding that people (or rocks!) are more than they appear. The humor and expressive illustrations making it a lively choice for circle time or story sessions. Simple language and clear contrasts between characters help young learners make predictions and connections.

Rock and Roll is a delightful addition to any early years classroom library. Its blend of humor, heart, and meaningful themes makes it a valuable tool for teachers looking to nurture empathy and understanding in young learners.

Rock and Roll are completely different - one is strong, one is soft, one loves attention and the other hates it however when they get together, they're an excellent team . This is a charming little book - it's very simply about admiring each others strengths and realising that we're better together.

The illustrations are fun and helpful to convey the meaning to younger readers - although they may miss some of the subtleties of the story that make it entertaining for older readers. However I do I think that this book would make a lovely gift because of the message that it carries.

Rock and Roll is a nice picture book to share with children to invite discussions about celebrating differences and working together. It's not perhaps a long enough one to be the basis of a specific lesson but is still a lovely one for story time - and we all know that is just as important!
