Synopsis
From bestselling author-illustrator Tom Percival comes a poignant picture book that encourages us to take notice of all the wondrous little things that happen to us each day.
Daniel is having a terrible day. From the rain that tumbles down from the dark, grey skies to the puddles that soak his shoes, Daniel's convinced that nothing will lift his mood. But everything changes when he hears the sweet, delicate sound of music, barely audible beneath the rain. Perhaps, if he looks carefully enough, Daniel might find that there are moments of joy and wonder that can brighten even the darkest of days . . .

The Wonder follows the story of a boy called Daniel who's having a bad day. Just when it seems as though nothing can turn his day around, he hears the beautiful sound of musicians nearby, and he feels a change within him. From then on, Daniel begins to notice and appreciate the wonder around him, described in the story as little sparks of joy and bright flashes of wonder.
The book has beautiful illustrations, as we have come to expect from Tom Percival. My Year 1 class (ages 5+) appreciated the way that the illustrations became more vibrant and colourful as Daniel's mood changed, and that the moments of joy he encountered were depicted in full colour.
The story opened up a lovely discussion about moments of joy we have had recently, such as spotting a daffodil on the walk to school and a rainbow in the sky at break time. We also used this book alongside our lessons in Religious Education to write prayers of things we are thankful for.
We loved this book and we thought it was an especially great reminder of how fortunate and lucky we are to be surrounded by such beauty and magnificence. I have noticed the children returning to this book again and again.
