In Mermaid Academy: Cora and Sparkle, the second story set in and around Mermaid Academy, the focus is the under-confident Cora and her dolphin partner, Sparkle. Cora has been at the academy for a few weeks and misses spending time close to her twin, Issy. So, she is excited to hear the news that instead of normal lessons on Fridays, the students would participate in 'enrichment activities' or clubs. Cora's chooses music club, but then she changes her mind and opts for what her sister has chosen. There is so much excitement when Sparkle discovers that she can make whirlwaves, but this has to be done covertly until others know what their powers are.
Cora loves all of the ocean animals but there is something strange happening, some creatures are stealing coral from the Glass Ocean. Great danger awaits but can the friends finally solve the mystery? Will their investigations uncover the culprit? Are the swarming sword sharks to blame or has she bitten off more than she can chew? Will Cora eventually decide to be true to herself in choices she makes?
Younger chapter book readers will enjoy diving into the world of Cora and her fellow mermaids, made even more magical with Lucy Truman’s drawings. It will inspire children to read for pleasure and leave them wanting more.
