Based on Julie Sykes and Linda Chapman's Unicorn Academy chapter books, Under the Fairy Moon is a companion book to the Netflix programmes of the same name, retelling the first episode of the second series. Sapphire Dorm remain central to the adventures however there appears to be significant changes to some characters. In the original books Isabel's unicorn is Cloud but in the TV series, (and so this book) her unicorn is River and judging from the two book covers, their appearances are very different. This is also true for other characters.
I imagine that a fan of the original books coming to the TV series, either through the programme itself or via these tie-in books, may be confused or discouraged by these differences. However, it highlights the idea that the TV series and the books, although connected, are two vastly different art forms and with all such adaptations considerable changes are likely.
Unicorn Academy: Under the Fairy Moon focuses on Isabel and River's relationship as they take part in a Flower Foraging activity. Unfortunately, Isabel's competitiveness causes her to be reckless with her own and River's safety, leading her to get injured and their bond breaking. But, with a stranger with a sinister interest in River lurking in the background, can the Unicorn Riders rescue River and reunite him with his rider?
This story, full of suspense, tension, magic and adventure is a good read for fans of either version of Unicorn Academy, or even, like me, newcomers to the world.
