The Infinite

The Infinite

The cover drew me immediately to this book and I was excited to get started, and meet the character of Elle Bibi-Imbele Ifie. I found the beginning a little bit frustrating. As with all science fiction books, you have to slog through the inevitable world building at the start. However, without the parts in the school at the start, the rest of the story would not have made sense.

The excitement really starts when Elle and her best friend Big Ben leap forward in time on a school trip to the Time Squad Centre in 2048. What? That's right, most of the characters in this book are Leaplings. They were born on 29th February and have a special gift of being able to leap through time.

When they get to the future, and meet other Leaplings and some Annuals (people with birthdays on other days of the, who can't jump through time), it becomes clear that something weird is going on. Leaplings are disappearing in time, and something strange is going on at the centre. What did the text message that Elle received from the future mean? Who can be trusted? Can Elle and her friends find the missing Leaplings and save the World?

I really grew to love this book. I thought the descriptions of the characters using their conditions such as ADHD and autism to their advantage was really well done, and I loved the word play and clever use of language - I know it's to be expected when the author is better known as a poet - but it added another dimension to this fun and fantastical book. I hope we get to meet the characters again in future adventures.
